Your veterinarian can run the right tests diagnose the correct disease and prescribe the appropriate treatment but only if your cat is in his office. Cats usually have some variety of green yellow or blue eyes. You have to make the first assessment by determining that something isn t quite right. A healthy cat s eyes should be bright and clear.

Cats have an inner third eyelid called a nictating membrane also spelled nictitating which serves to protect the eye from dryness and or damage. Your cat s pupils should also be equal in size and shape and the area around his or her eyeballs should be pure white. When a cat is sick the third eyelid will partially close which is a signal to get him to the vet immediately if other symptoms present. Sometimes that watery discharge is a sign that your cat s eyes are in full fight mode against a threat to their health.

If you notice changes in your cat s iris or the appearance of splotches of other colors contact your vet. Untreated ear problems are painful and can cause. Cats with pupils that are not the same size are suffering from anisocoria which is a symptom and not a disease. Gums should be pink.

It also fights bacteria. Eye problems can bring out another cat entirely one who paws at their eyes squints or blinks excessively. Should be clean and free of discharge odor and redness. Normally a cat s eye color doesn t change in adulthood it is normal for a kitten s blue eyes to change to a different color as he or she matures.

If your cat s eyes appear red or inflamed if she has unusual drainage from her eyes some moisture in the eyes is normal and healthy.

It s not unusual for the iris to change with age. Known as the tear film this layer removes debris. Each eye is a different color. It should be remembered though that melanin affects fur differently from eyes.

This means a dark furred cat can have light eyes and vice versa. However a condition called iris melanosis can result in the development of brown freckles or patches of pigment on the iris usually in middle aged to older cats.
